1947-1949 Lida Meskaityte draws a lot, makes copies from magazines, postcards. Paints small studies of flowers - pansies, chamomiles, and lilies. Draws greeting cards, small birds, twigs. In her art studies the Classic art attracts her most - real and not invented. Her bent for thoroughness and precision in drawing revealed itself in the early works of a self-trained artist. The dates '28. 29. 30. 8. 49.' written on a small copy 'Mountain Goats', painted in watercolours, doubtless mean that the author was copying the picture for three days in August 1949. In this period of artistic creation one can perceive the young artist's interest in principles of perspective and find the portraits drawn from nature 'Self-Portrait', 'Mummy' (both 1948). Her portraits are real, proportional, drawn carefully, thoroughly. The composition 'Native Cloudlet' (1949) is painted in watercolours using a many-layer painting technique, smoke-coloured paints, accurate but rather dry manner of painting. Going into the very principles of an artistic expression, colours and colouring, she finds her individuality - seeking for logicality, clearness and reality. Chooses a small size picture - a miniature painted in watercolours. Slowly but persistently, patiently and accurately, with tiny dots and short strokes she starts painting from nature. M.KUODIENĖ
